Chia seeds, small in size but big on benefits, are attracting growing interest in the field of nutrition and health. Native to Mexico and a member of the sage family, this small seed has become a staple in many healthy diets. Renowned for their richness in essential nutrients such as omega-3, fiber and protein, chia seeds offer a multitude of health benefits.

It has been shown that 15g of Chia root contains around 3750 mg of omega-3 and 1050 mg of omega-6. See the Omega-3 and Omega-6 factsheets to find out more about their respective properties.

Chia also contains around 20% protein and is a good source of vitamin B9, calcium and antioxidants in the form of polyphenols.

We recommend eating between 1 and 2 tablespoons of chia seeds a day.

Precautions with chia


According to the European Committee for Novel Foods and Processes, chia has an allergenic potential that has not yet been clearly determined. People allergic to other seeds (sesame or linseed, for example) should therefore exercise caution because of possible cross-allergy.


Side effects


  • Occasional discomfort and gastrointestinal disorders, particularly following heavy consumption;
  • excessive blood thinning with high daily doses = over 30-40g daily.
