Linseed (Linum usitatissimum) is a small seed rich in fibre, vegetable protein, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidant lignans. They are reputed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, regulate intestinal transit and relieve menopausal symptoms. Excessive consumption can cause flatulence, bloating and diarrhoea.

Lower cholesterol levels

  • Although the results of studies differ, long-term daily consumption of 2 tbsp to 5 tbsp (20 g to 50 g) of ground flaxseed may help to slightly reduce blood cholesterol levels in people with high cholesterol.

Gastritis or enteritis

  • Soak 1/2 tbsp to 1 tbsp (5 g to 10 g) of crushed or ground seeds in 150 ml of water for 20 to 30 minutes; strain before drinking.

Irritable bowel syndrome

  • The use of flaxseed to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is approved by Commission E and ESCOP. However, as they contain a lot of insoluble fibre, they can be irritating to the intestine.

How can flaxseed be used to lose weight?

Flaxseeds, whether whole or ground, are eaten soaked in water for their laxative properties. Oil can also be extracted from the seeds, which are pressed immediately after harvesting. Flaxseed oil can be used in cooking, raw, on its own or in vinaigrettes.

In particular, it can help regulate intestinal transit, lower cholesterol levels, prevent certain cancers and reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. They also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
