The leaves of the white mulberry tree (Morus alba L.) have long been used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine for all kinds of metabolic disorders, and in particular for their hypoglycaemic and cholesterol-lowering effects.

The leaves of this small tree from the Moraceae family are rich in micronutrients (vitamins and minerals: beta-carotene, iron, calcium and zinc in particular) as well as various other phytonutrients (resveratrol, quercetin, anthocyanins, for example) with numerous proven health benefits. In particular, it contains an iminosugar (a carbohydrate analogue in which a nitrogen atom replaces an oxygen atom) called deoxynojirimycin (or DNJ).

Iminosugars are common components of plants that are thought to be responsible for some of their scientific properties. DNJ was the 1st iminosugar isolated from mulberry leaves.

Mode of action

Studies have shown that these iminosugars are powerful inhibitors of glucosidases. Glucosidases are enzymes in the intestine responsible for breaking down carbohydrates into glucose, the simple carbohydrate molecule, which can then be absorbed by the intestine. Glucosidases, for example, break down the starch in bread, pasta or rice into glucose, enabling it to be absorbed.

By occupying the active site of these enzymes, DNJ partially prevents the absorption of glucose in the intestine.

Since then, these compounds have been the subject of a large number of studies confirming the benefits of DNJ in controlling blood sugar levels.
