Yerba maté is a plant used to make the Maté drink, which is ideal for sportspeople thanks to its anti-fatigue properties. Yerba maté is a plant that grows naturally on the banks of streams and in mountain forests.
Weight loss
In the UK and France, yerba maté is accepted as an adjunct to weight-loss treatments because of the appetite-suppressant effect of caffeine.
In Switzerland, a study of weight-loss products revealed that a yerba mate-based product could have a weight-loss effect.
Two other clinical studies have produced results that point in this direction. However, they were unable to assess the specific effect of yerba mate because the preparations contained other active substances.
In the first trial, researchers showed that yerba maté mixed with guarana (Paullinia cupana) and damiana (Turnera diffusa) slowed stomach emptying.
This blend is thought to prolong the feeling of satiety and make it easier to control eating.
In the second study, consumption of a commercial energy drink containing yerba maté extract and caffeine increased the energy expenditure of young adults in good health.

On sait que la caféine a un effet coupe-faim. C’est pour cette raison que l’on a utilisé des extraits de yerba maté dans des produits amaigrissants, en association avec l’éphédra.
L’association caféine/éphédra peut favoriser une légère perte de poids à court terme, dans le cadre d’un régime faible en calories.
Cependant, l’utilisation de ce type de produits n’est pas recommandée. En effet, non seulement l’éphédra et l’éphédrine ont de puissants effets stimulants potentiellement dangereux, mais la caféine les augmente.
En mai 2006, Santé Canada a émis une mise en garde, qui est toujours en vigueur, contre la consommation de produits amaigrissants contenant de la caféine et de l’éphédrine (cette dernière peut aussi être mentionnée sous les noms de ma Huang, éphèdre ou éphédra sur l’étiquette).
La vente de produits contenant à la fois de la caféine (yerba maté, café, guarana, thé vert, noix de kola, etc.) et de l’éphédra ou de l’éphédrine est interdite au Canada.
En novembre 2010, Santé Canada a émis un avis indiquant la saisie de produits de santé non homologués dans 2 magasins de Colombie-Britannique. L’un d’eux – Red Devil® (Red Devil) – contenait de la caféine (yerba maté) et de l’éphédrine.
