Paraguayan holly as an ingredient in energizing infusions

Hundreds of years ago, the Guarani Indians living in the regions of Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay discovered a miracle tree growing in the jungle surrounding their tribe. They didn't yet know it was the Paraguayan holly, but they were well aware of its properties. They noticed that chewing the freshly picked leaves made them feel stimulated, energized and more highly concentrated. These properties proved very useful during grueling hours of hunting. The plant became such an important part of their culture that they devoted an almost religious cult to it, believing it to be a gift from the gods. For many years, it remained their secret - until the arrival in South America in the 17th century of invaders from overseas, and with them missionaries from the Jesuit order, who took an interest in Indian life and culture. One plant in particular, called “caá mati” by the natives, caught the monks' attention. The Jesuits gave the plant a new name, combining the Spanish word “hierba”, the Portuguese “erva” and the Latin “herba” (all meaning “herb”), and the word “mati”, which in Kéchua means “calabash” (a container made from the natural fruit of the calabash, in which an infusion of holly leaves is drunk). Thus was born the Verba Mate we know today.
